Someone's Eye

I recall when Mother Nature was the girl next door.
We could take in every creature and shake him by the paw.
But then from grace we fell
Into an urban hell.
Now concrete overlays
The sacred soil of former days.

Far too many people,
Far too little fuel.
If one of us has got to go I'd rather it be you.
The Earth's a raft afloat,
Please don't tip the boat.
The weight of numbers weighs
Heavily on waterways.

And it looks like the old days
Have long since long gone.
Days when a man could stretch his arms out wide
Without poking someone's eye.

I recall when Father Greenwood ruled us like a king.
You could take in any creature and shake him by the wing.
But then our numbers grew,
The tower blocks grew too.
It's scary but it's true,
There's no room left for oak or yew.

And it looks like tomorrow
Has already come.
Days when a man can't cast away restraints
Without receiving complaints.

And it looks like the old days
Have long since long gone.
Days when a man could stretch his arms out wide
Without poking someone's eye.
